I ett avsnitt av Note to Self ("the tech show about being human") sa Anil Dash sjukt bra saker om Silicon Valley-jättarnas misslyckande att erbjuda oss civiliserad teknik, teknik som främjar sansade samtal istället för hat och hot. Om vi låter hatarna definiera vad yttrandefrihet är och vad som är rimligt på nätet så vinner de totalt, vi kan nämligen inte samexistera. Om jag vill få till exempel tycka saker om dataspel offentligt på YouTube utan att motta våldtäktshot så går det inte ihop med de som tänker skrika och skräna och hota och hata. Så då låter man kanske bli. Hatkampanjer startar på internet och tar sig snabbt ut i verkliga livet, platser där Anita Sarkeesian skulle gjort framträdanden har terrorhotats ("ställ in hennes framträdande annars mördar jag er alla" - hur kan någon på något sätt inte se att detta är ett större konkret hot mot yttrandefrihet än modererade kommentarsfält?), kvinnor måste leva med hemlig adress för att arga män och pojkar på internet kan härja nästan helt fritt. Varken polis eller företag gör någonting.
För all sin meritokrati och genialitet som SV tycker sig ha har de gjort väldigt lite framsteg på det här området, och faktum är ju att de visat väldigt lite vilja. Såhär sa Anil Dash:
“If I walked into the lobby of Google’s offices, and started shouting obscenities and epithets at people, I would at the very least be asked to leave. I would certainly not be given one of their free juices to drink and be like ”come here and hang out”. If I do the exact same thing on YouTube which they own... There’s no recourse, there’s no accountability. They don’t object.
And, their argument is ”we couldn’t possibly build the technologies, the systems or have enough people monitoring to see what happens…” If only you were one of the richest companies in the history of the world and had billions of dollars of resources... Hey wait! That is you! And they’re like ”we can build rockets and self driving cars, and we can have these, you know, hovering internet connection platforms that are tied to hot air balloons. But we can’t solve people being rude to each other on YouTube”. And you know, this isn’t a ”can’t”, this is a ”won’t.””
Teknik för människor, kan det vara nåt? Teknik som hjälper oss ta fram det bästa i oss istället för det sämsta? Svindlande tanke!
